The main draw is towards the Tawang Monastery, housing a 26-feet high brass statue of the Buddha; constructed in mid-16th century with an attitude of dominating the skyline like a mighty medieval fortress. There is the three-storeyed dukhang (main prayer hall), with an amply aureate Buddha statue.
Other than Tawang Monastery there are many other monasteries, the most famous being yet smaller than Urgelling Gompa, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama. Coming to the next in the line is Sange Ryabgelling shrine, which is located at a short distance from Urgeling.
Going a few kilometers more away from town of Tawang you’ll find is the Khinme Monastery, which belongs to the Nyingmapa sect.
Not that far from the road of Tawang-Bumla, it is the Singshur nunnery. About a half- hour drive from Tawang lies Taktsang Gompa, one of the holiest Buddhist shrines in Arunachal Pradesh.
The stretch is longish and you can cover the town in 16 hours of drive with stops including. The best time for a road trip like this is in the month of March, April, May, June, September and October.
