Joann Pai is a food and lifestyle photographer based in Vancouver, Canada. Joann began taking pictures to capture fleeting moments in life, mainly those involving food, and she continues to investigate how food binds people together and fosters a sense of community. Although she typically divides her time between Paris and Vancouver, her extensive travels have significantly impacted the development of her distinctive visual aesthetic. She has been recognised as one of the top food Instagram accounts worldwide by magazines including Forbes, The Telegraph, and Buzzfeed. She was a founding co-founder of the online journal Acorn magazine, which tells visual stories about culinary culture. She uses primarily natural light and keeps her equipment to a minimum.
Here is what she has in her bag: a Canon 5D Mark II. This was the first camera she ever purchased, and she adored it. Since then, she has continued to use Canons. She primarily uses the Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens because she appreciates its versatility and focuses length. The “nifty fifty” is a fantastic all-purpose lens as well. Joann pai adores the sharpness and details that this macro lens captures while using the Canon 100mm f/2.8L. Although she prefers prime lenses for sharpness, she still uses the Canon 24-105mm f/4 because of its wide zoom range and convenience for travel. She is connected to her laptop via a MacBook Pro.
