Mayowa Adewale Emmanuel, popularly recognised as Mayorkun has become a family title in the African track scene. The DMW act has made a number of hits and bought out a number of venues, thereby stamping a sturdy foothold as a huge act in the continent.
Mayorkun is the first of three children, born in Osun State to a household of gifted people. His mother is a Nollywood actress and his father is a film producer. Mayorkun started proudly owning his musical craft at a young age when he joined the choir. He studied accounting at the University of Lagos (Unilag) and later acquired a job in the banking sector.
In 2016, Mayorkun left his banking job to centre his attention solely on his musical career and this was when Davido discovered him. He posted a cowl of Davido’s “The Money” on his Twitter account. Davido noticed the video and reached out to him. When his cowl video was noticed by Davido in February 2016. Davido followed him on Twitter and Instagram, after which Davido asked him if he can do extra than play the keyboard. He acquired a name from Davido the same day he wrote his resignation letter and sent Davido some of the songs he already recorded. Davido decided to signal him to Davido Music Worldwide known as DMW.
Mayorkun launched his first single under the label known as “Eleko” in 2016. The song debuted at number 9 on the Nigeria Playdata charts, on 1 May 2016, and reached variety 5, on 28 May 2016. The video of the music gathered a million views in the first 10 days. To his name, Mayorkun has numerous singles inclusive of Yawa, Sade, Che Che, and Mama. In October 2018, he released singles “Posh” and “Fantasy” featuring Olu Maintain. in anticipation of his first studio album titled “The Mayor of Lagos”. The Mayor of Lagos”. The Mayor of Lagos was launched on the 16th of November 2018. On December 1, 2018, it was regarded on the Billboard World Albums chart, peaking at quantity 15.
In 2020 he was amongst the artists scheduled for performance at the Convention in the middle of the Eko Hotel and Suites, Victoria Island, Lagos for the 2020 forefront character awards. Other scheduled artists included Tekno, Timaya, and many more. The Mayor of Lagos as he is fondly referred to didn’t allow his parent’s fame get to him, he took it upon himself to get a name for himself instead of being referred to as the son of a celebrity.
Mayorkun embarked on a nationwide tour in 2017 that saw him perform in over 35 schools. He ended the 12 months of 2017 with his first headline concert in Lagos called “The Mayor of Lagos”. The Mayor of Lagos concert persisted in 2018 with a show in the city of Ibadan and the federal capital territory, Abuja. Also, a date for a Lagos edition was once announced. In 2018, Mayorkun did a tour of the UK alongside label mate Dremo, the place he carried out in about six cities. He also carried out alongside label boss Davido at the wireless festival. In 2021, he announce his exit from DMW at the launch birthday party of his 2nd album “Back In Office”, in an interview with Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, they both (Davido, and Mayorkun) shared the news with followers at his album lunch party. The studio album “Back In Office”, was launched through Sony Music, West Africa division in Nigeria on 29 October 2021.
