Slater, the son of an owner of a bait shop, grew up close to the water and learned to surf at the age of five. He began winning age-division competitions when he was just 10 years old. In 1984, he captured the age-division United States championship. He placed third in the junior division at the global amateur championship held in England two years later, and the Pacific Cup Junior championship was his to win in Australia the following year. After going professional in 1990, Slater had a difficult time during his first two years on the professional tour, placing 90th and 43rd in the world rankings in those years. Before winning his first competition on the professional tour, the Rip Curl Pro in France, in 1992, he had podium places in three of his first five competitions. His victory in the famous Pipeline Masters in Hawaii that year gave him his first global championship, and at the age of 20, he became the sport’s youngest ever champion.
Slater placed sixth in the 1993 rankings but returned in 1994 to start a five-year run of total dominance on the world tour, winning the champion’s crown each year from 1994 to 1998. At the end of 1998, he decided to stop competing in surfing. Slater had several appearances in surf-related movies, TV series, and video games while on the world tour. In 2002, he made a comeback to the world pro tour. In 2005, he came in second place in the world rankings championship. In 2011, he won his 11th world title, making him the youngest and oldest surfer to ever win the competition. In 2003, his memoirs Pipe Dreams: A Surfer’s Journey and a second book were released.
