German-Filipina Pia Wurtzbach is a model, actress, and winner of beauty pageants. She is well recognized for having won the 2015 Miss Universe competition, the biggest beauty pageant in the world. She had earlier in the year won the Miss Universe Philippines title. She was born in West Germany, but her family relocated to the Philippines. Pia’s parents divorced at nine years old. She suffered severe childhood trauma. This caused a financial catastrophe that Pia and her mother endured for a considerable time. But Pia managed to break into the Filipino entertainment business and began providing for her family.
She started a profession as a beauty writer, stylist, and makeup artist after graduating from high school. She has been acting in films and TV shows since she won the Miss Universe competition, and she now represents UNAIDS in the Asia Pacific region as a goodwill ambassador.
Her father is German, and her mother is Filipino. Pia has a younger sister. Pia was named in keeping with the Philippines’ tradition. Her middle name ‘Alonzo’ is her mother’s maiden name.
Pia attended the ABS-CBN Distance Learning School in Quezon City for her secondary school. She obtained a culinary arts degree from the Centre for Asian Culinary Studies in San Juan, Metro Manila.
The first time Pia joined Binibining Pilipinas was in 2013. It just so happens to be the largest regional beauty contest in the nation. She gave an outstanding performance, and after the pageant, she has crowned the first runner-up. Her relative success further inspired her to compete in the following year. She did poorly in Binibining Pilipinas 2014 and finished in the top 15 only.
By the time Binibining Pilipinas 2015 was over, she had won the competition three times and was awarded Miss Universe Philippines. It awarded her the right to represent the Philippines in the 2015 Miss Universe competition.
Pia trained for three years to become Miss Universe Philippines. Before joining the pageant, Pia collaborated with groups that are leaders in the fight against HIV/AIDS in the Philippines, a disease that is just recently starting to get national attention due to its seriousness.
She had flawless answers to all questions during the Miss Universe 2015 competition in Las Vegas, Nevada, and was thus named the new Miss Universe. However, the revelation of the final results sparked a significant uproar when Steve Harvey incorrectly announced that the Columbian beauty Ariadna Gutierrez had won. A few seconds later, however, he realized his error, and Pia was awarded the 2015 Miss Universe title.
And just like what was mentioned earlier, her advocacy for the LGBT community and HIV awareness continues after winning the crown. She is now part of UNAIDS. On May 3, 2017, UNAIDS named Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, a model, actress, and Miss Universe 2015, its Goodwill Ambassador for Asia and the Pacific.
Pia has been actively interested in humanitarian causes, speaking out against cyberbullying and promoting the LGBT community and HIV-positive individuals. She took an HIV test in front of the cameras while she was Miss Universe to encourage people to find out if they were HIV positive, and she also went to the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS. She was headquartered in the US city of New York.
In her new position, Pia educates young people about HIV and advocates for the elimination of all forms of prejudice against those who are HIV positive and other vulnerable groups, such as transgender and men who have sex with men.
After winning Ms. Universe, Pia has been very active in her career. She was a judge on the fifth season of “Asia’s Next Top Model.” The same year revealed that she would co-star in the movie “Gandarrapido: The Revenger Squad” with Filipino superstar Daniel Padilla. The film was a massive success on both the box office and the critics’ lists, and it ended up being one of the highest-grossing Filipino movies of the year. After almost ten years, Pia made her film comeback, which considerably boosted the movie’s success.
Indeed, with a pure heart, goal, proper mindset, and helping others, your time will come, and it will shine just like Pia. She waited for her time while doing something that matters not just for her but for everyone around her.
